We head down to Bohemia in Brighton for some Winter Bliss.

Nestled in the heart of Brighton’s historic Lanes, we came across Bohemia, it promises to be ‘somewhere for sophisticates to spoil themselves’ and after stepping inside we can see why. The interior is dark and it feels really cosy but the space is actually quite vast with the bar spanning over three floors and if that’s not enough – at the very top there’s a champagne roof terrace. Each floor has a different feel and we especially loved the secret hideaway with the black leather sofas and private bar — very Brockmans!

After we’d had a look around, we met with Mikey, the bar manager, who was making us a Brockmans cocktail. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Mikey is from somewhere more exotic than Brighton but his exact accent is hard to place. After asking, we are told that he’s London born and bred and the accent is just a culmination of all the people he has surrounded himself with over the years.

Our thoughts move back to the cocktail, “What are you going to make?” we asked him, to which he replied, “Hmm not sure yet but I love experimenting with Brockmans so let’s see”. After seeing some of the other cocktail descriptions on the menu, we were excited.

Mikey scanned the bottles behind the bar and quickly settled on a bottle of banana liqueur. We weren’t sure. Banana liqueur? Isn’t that a throwback from the 80s where it was the norm to have neon cocktails with umbrellas? How wrong were we. It was delicious. Perfectly balanced and the flavour of Brockmans came through beautifully. It’s a strong drink as there’s no mixer but the addition of the fresh fruit made it really refreshing.

Making the Winter Bliss

Whilst Mikey made us another one (because you should always have two just to make sure…) we asked him a few questions:

1. DESCRIBE BOHEMIA IN A FEW WORDS.

Luxurious and layered in tradition, to say the least Bohemia is a creative cocktail bar and restaurant in Brighton with a few hidden spaces and charms up its sleeve with its buzzing nights.

2. WHAT IS THE BEST THING YOU HAVE OVERHEARD AT THE BAR AT BOHEMIA?

So many funny and weird things a bartender hears behind a bar, not sure I could pick one.

3. WHY IS GIN SO POPULAR?

Hundreds of different gins are produced world-wide now. Gin is a key player and has a long history in cocktail world, many of the classics are gin based – martini, negroni, martinez. A spirit which is very complex in its history, its culture and its flavour makes it an on-trend one for over a century.

4. WHAT ABOUT BROCKMANS APPEALS TO YOU?

Excellent balance of flavours. It’s great to see new exciting botanicals being used in gin which comes all together as a unique but harmonious blend of flavours.

5. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE LAST DRINK BEFORE YOU DIED, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Martini with olives. Shaken not stirred. Besides the fact it’s a timeless favourite cocktail which never goes out of fashion, you can get it everywhere because of its simplicity and it’s just too easy to be messed up.

Winter Bliss

Ingredients

  • 50ml Brockmans Gin
  • 25ml Banana Liqueur
  • 3 fresh raspberries
  • 2 fresh blackberries
  • Sprig of thyme
  • Twist of lime

Method

Add all the ingredients except the thyme and lime garnish to a shaker with some ice and hard shake for a few mins before straining into a coupe glass. Add the sprig of thyme and a twist of lime to garnish.
